He served as a tribune of the plebs in 90 BCE, and he later served under
Lucius Cornelius Sulla in Greece.
He was later elected consul in 76 BCE with Gnaeus Octavius.
After his consulship, he was made governor of Macedonia. During his term, he successfully fought against
the Dardani and Moesians and earned a military triumph in 71 BCE for his victories, which included crossing
the Danube River - the first Roman to do so. He was later a supporter of
Cicero during the
Catilinarian Conspiracy and a political opponent of Julius Caesar.
