Publius Sulpicius Rufus

A great political aid to Marius, responsible for recalling Marius from exile.

Sulpicius was born c.124 BCE, and he soon established himself as a successful orator. Sulpicius served as a legate in 89 BCE to Gnaeus Pompeius Strabo during the Social War and as a tribune of the plebs in 88BCE. During this time, he worked to aid Marius as Marius seemed to have promised him financial assistance. He put forth a bill, by which the Italian allies and freedmen would have been enfranchised and thus have outnumbered the traditional Roman voters. Despite opposition from the Senate, Sulpicius forced this law through. He also passed a law giving Marius the command against Mithridates, another law recalling political exiles, and a law setting a maximum amount for senators’ debts. These actions, however, incited the rage of Sulla, who then proceeded to march on Rome. Sulpicius was found at a villa in Laurentem and put to death. His head was sent to Sulla and exposed in the Forum. His bill was annulled.
